Hosmer Nursery offers a variety of mulches from double ground to triple ground, and natural to dyed products.
Double Ground vs. Triple Ground double ground mulch is run through the mulching grinder twice, which making a noticeably heavier chip, but still as excellent quality product. Triple ground mulch is run through the mulching grinder a third time creating a more shredded appearance, and fluffier finish when laid in your beds.
Natural Vs. Dyed Mulches The majority of our mulches are natural, meaning they have no color enhancement. We do have two color enhanced mulches, our Rustic Red and Smokey Mountain Black. They are enhanced because their color is not naturally existing, and although they can be messy to work with, there is no reason for concern regarding safety, they are completely safe to use.
Varieties we offer:
Hosmer Double Ground (Our signature economy mulch) Double ground hardwood that is a natural dark brown. It provides excellent results at a reasonable price. This is a second most popular mulch.
Virginia Brown Premium triple ground, 100% hardwood. Natural dark brown for a professional finishing touch. this is all around excellent mulch for any application.
Pine Bark Mulch Triple ground 100% bark product useful around acid-loving plants such as evergreens and rhododendrons.
Rustic Red Color enhanced red. Fine ground softwoods with long lasting color. Compliments commercial and residential properties.
Smokey Mountain Black Color enhanced black hardwood. Long lasting color provides contrast to plants and buildings. Very popular, it’s our number one seller!
Playground Mulch 100% natural wood fiber chips. The chips have been run through a tumbler to soften the edges and minimize the splintering, making it great for playground areas, dog runs, and walking paths.
Mushroom Compost A mixture of manure and decomposed straw to topdress and use with flowers and vegetable gardens. This product should not be used with trees or shrubs.
Composted Cow Manure Finished nutrient rich 100% cow manure-weed and odor free. Full of beneficial microbes to topdress and mix with existing plantings.
Leaf Compost Decomposed leaf matter to condition soil and add nutrition. Mix in planting and top soils. Restore beds with organic matter.
We have beautifully screened topsoil for your landscaping needs. We screen all of our topsoil on site, and perform soil analyses to ensure quality.
Crusher Run #1 (CR1) is ideal for base on your pavers patios and walkways. Also a great base for under concrete and small out buildings like your backyard shed.
Crusher Run #2 (CR2) Larger sized crushed stoned great for driveways.
Washed #1 This is a washed angular stone used for irrigation and behind stone walls.
Washed Blend This is angular #1 and #2 washed stone good for irrigation and behind stone walls.
Concrete Sand A coarse sand for a multitude of uses including under pavers.
Pea Gravel Rounded gray tones useful as an accent around pools, landscape beds, pavers, and buildings.
Washed #2 round stone Rounded gray-multi colored stone useful as an accent around pools, landscape beds, pavers, and buildings. It is considerably larger than Peas Gravel, but smaller than River Rock. It is quickly Becoming one of our most popular account stone items for your yard.
River Rock Gray-multi colored smooth cobbles 1-3” in size. It is an excellent accent rock.
Amber Pebbles Cream and white smooth pebbles to highlight and accent, in or around ponds and landscapes. 1/2” to 1.5” in size.
Magenta Angled maroon rock chips about 1-2”in size. Attractive accent stone for walkways and garden beds.
Timberlite A Multi-colored cream, orange, and black lava-like rock. The range size is approximate 2-2.5”. This type of rock is often used as an accent rock for garden beds and various landscape projects

Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea)
Balsam Firs are your traditional quenticial Christmas Tree. They have that classic “Christmas” Small. Their needles are soft with a medium green color, and the tree itself is full and fairly uniform from the bottom to the top.
Concolor Fir (Abies Concolor or also known as White Fir)
Concolor Firs are native to the mountains of Western North America. They have gained in popularity as a Christmas tree over the past several decades. They have a great strong citrus scent to them. Their needles are long, soft and wide with a frosted blue look. They are the longest lasting Christmas trees, and are the most hypo-allergenic tree you can buy.
Canaan Fir (Abies balsamea var. phanerolepis (Fern.)
Canaan (pronounced "Ka-naan", with emphasis on the last syllable) is a relative newcomer to the Christmas tree market. It has many similarities to both Fraser and balsam firs in growth and appearance. It has medium-longer Dark green needles. It tends to be a slender tall tree. This Tree will definitely continue to grow in popularity as a great Christmas Tree.
Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)
Douglas-fir is not related to the true firs. The needles are dark green or blue green, 1 to 1 1/2 inches long, soft to the touch and radiate out in all directions from the branch. They have a sweet fragrance when crushed. Slightly citrus in scent. They are one of the most popular Christmas trees in the country.
Korean Fir (Abies koreana)
Korean fir is a small to medium-sized evergreen coniferous tree. The leaves are needle-like, flattened, glossy dark green above, and with two broad, vividly white bands of stomata below, and slightly notched at the tip. This is a great tree for small apartments or living space, as they are more slender and conical in form.
Grand Fir (Abies grandis (Dougl. ex D. Don) Lindl.)
The grand fir has needles that are 1 to 1 1/2 inches long with glossy dark green tops and two highly visible white lines of stomata on the undersides. It produces a beautiful, thick foliaged tree when sheared and is known for its strong fragrance. This Christmas tree is pyramidal in form, being thin at the top, and full and round at the base. A very popular tree among our customers.
Nordmann Fir (Abies nordmanniana) - some time referred to as Turkish Fir.
Nordmann Firs have flat needles that are glossy dark green on top with bluish white bands below. They hold their needles well after being cutting. Their form is quite interesting in that the branches are layered with significant space between each row of branches. This is a great tree for those looking for a more open habit.
Fraser Fir (Abies fraseri (Pursh) Poir.)
The Fraser fir is the number one Christmas tree in the United State today. Their branches turn slightly upward, and have good form and needle-retention. They are dark blue-green in color, and have a pleasant evergreen scent. Their branches are strong and able to hold heavier ornaments well. They make a great tree for apartments or smaller homes because of their tall slender pyramidal form.
White Spruce (Picea glauca)
The White spruce is an excellent spruce variety for a christmas tree. They have better needle retention than other spruces, and have a softer touch. They are bluish-green - green in color, but sometimes that a pleasant scent when crushed. Over all has a decent Christmas tree form.
Norway Spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karsten)
For Christmas trees, overall color of Norway spruce is fair to excellent, but needle retention is considered poor unless the trees are cut fresh and kept properly watered. We recommend using a tree food table with this variety.
Blue Spruce (Picea pungens Engelm.)
The Colorado Blue Spruce is an old traditional christmas. It is admired for it beautiful blue color. The tree has strong branching with spiny needles.
